Ageing Skin
The appearance of ageing skin can be reversed without invasive treatments using daily skincare that has scientifically proven results.
For example, proper cleansing and exfoliation can smooth the skin surface to decrease pore size and wrinkles within days.
Anti-ageing skincare refers to all ingredients that combat skin ageing.
The aim of anti-ageing skin care is to preserve skin function and prevent the loss of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid.
To reverse the signs of skin ageing, four steps are needed:
Ageing through the years
20’s
Throughout our twenties, environmental damage and exposure to daylight begin to take their toll. Skin cell renewal starts to decline.
30’s
We will notice our first wrinkles in our thirties as collagen and elastin degrades. The skin may appear uneven and dull.
40’s
We will notice more prominent signs of ageing during our forties, including dark spots and dullness. Our skin becomes thinner and dehydrated.
50’s
From our fifties onwards, the skin will continue to develop wrinkles, fine lines and pigmentation. The skin's protective barrier weakens, which leads to sensitivity and dehydration.
Skincare Steps for ageing Skin
Skin Cleansing
Proper cleansing with lukewarm water is essential in looking after your skin.
Cleansing removes natural oils, sweat, dirt and sebum. Cleansing should not irritate or dry out your skin. A gentle cleanser is imperative.
Surfactants in cleansers bind dirt and oil. But they can also irritate. As can the other components. Newer cleansers have fortunately markedly improved.
In addition, medications such as salicylic acid and BPO can be added to reduce pore size and smooth the skin.
Cleansers
Skin exfoliation
This step gives the most immediate improvement in the appearance of the skin.
Exfoliation removes the outer layer of the skin and can be mechanical (such as masks) or chemical.
Chemical exfoliants remove the surface skin cells such as Alpha Hydroxy Acids and retinoids.

Protecting your skin from ageing
The single most effective treatment for ageing skin is sun avoidance and sunscreen.
Always remember that people get the worst sunburns on cloudy days.

Anti-ageing Treatment Skincare
Ingredients that are clinically proven to protect and prevent ageing of the skin include:
Topical antioxidants such as Vitamin C
Other products that are being used with increasing success include
Growth Factors
Retinoids
Retinoids are the most studied and proven ingredients for ageing skin. We have an excellent range of retinoid-containing skin care such as SkinVital Retimitate.
Retinoids
Antioxidants
Antioxidants capture and inactivate free radicals in the skin, reducing what is known as “oxidative stress”;
Antioxidants reduce the impact of damaging free radicals. Free radicals injure cells and cause inflammation. They also damage collagen and elastin.
Damage to collagen and elastin are the two most important reasons for skin ageing.
Vitamins C and E are well known for their antioxidant capabilities.
Antioxidants can be taken by mouth and applied to the skin. Using different antioxidants in combination rather than just one type is best.
Vitamins C and E, with ferulic acid, such as skin SkinVital, is an extremely effective example. Ferulic acid increases the stability of vitamin C, whilst vitamin E increases the level of antioxidants.

Vitamin C for skin anti-ageing
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant, which along with retinol and sunscreen, is one of the most important cosmeceutical ingredients for skin rejuvenation.
Like retinoids, vitamin C has been proven to increase collagen production.
Ascorbic acid creams should be used in the daytime to protect the skin from the effects of sunlight.
Vitamin C is best given by mouth and topically at the same time.
Unfortunately, vitamin C is highly unstable. Adding ferulic acid improves its stability.
Like retinoids, proper manufacturing storage and packaging will help keep the products from degrading.

Growth factors
Growth factors and peptides are the "new kids on the block" to repair and rejuvenate ageing skin. Good ones are far and few between.

Growth Factors
Hydroxyacids
There are three types of Hydroxy Acids.
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA)
Beta-Hydroxy Acids (BHA)
Poly-Hydroxy-Acids (PHA)
AHA
AHA's include:
Glycolic acid
Lactic acid
Mandelic acid
Citric acid
AHAs remove the surface skin cells and increase the level of hyaluronic acid.
AHAs help to:
Reduce fine lines
Soften stronger lines
Smooth skin texture
Brighten the complexion
Reduce pore size
Correction of ageing occurs within 14-16 weeks.
BHA
The best-known examples of BHA are:
Tropic acid
Salicylic acid (SA)
SA is lipid-loving and reduces pore size, and prevents acne.
PHA
These are larger molecules and penetrate the skin gradually. And cause less sensitivity.
Gluconolactone
Lactobionic acid
Hydroxy Acids
Collagen Building Skincare for Ageing Skin
Anti-ageing skin care aims to prevent the further loss of collagen and build up new collagen to compensate for any loss.

Evidence-based facts about anti-ageing Skincare
To date, no skincare products can increase elastin, so any claims that they increase elasticity are misleading. Most only moisture.
Retinoids are still the most proven anti-ageing ingredients.
Vitamin C or ascorbic acid also has significant data showing evidence of increased collagen synthesis.
Antioxidants help reverse some of the ageing processes, such as inflammation.
The effectiveness of growth factors depends on the growth factor type.
The growth factor TGF beta has the most data to support its use in skin rejuvenation.
Claims that peptides are effective anti-ageing ingredients are misleading. They have poor penetration and stability and react with other ingredients.
Hyaluronic acid should be considered more of a moisturiser and a product to increase the penetration of other ingredients rather than an anti-ageing product.
